I'd say 'mute was made a mod for the same reasons as BK, nice, helpful, on all the time...

Broken Kid and wintermute both received the most nominations when the topic of selecting new mods was brought to public vote. They also both have reputations for being level-headed and active participants on the forums. They know the community, and the community knows them.
